Family Counseling

Families are hard.  Relationships are hard.  We parent often as we were parented, even when we want to be different.  Our own experiences as children are often triggered by our children and the family patterns continue.  Our family affects who we are and who we become, both for the better and for the worse. We learn our vocabulary, our habits, our customs and rituals, and how to view and observe the world around us.

Parenting children who were adopted can make you feel alone because no one gets it.  No one understands how different it is to parent a child who has an attachment wound.

We can help you change those family patterns and look at your own experiences and how those patterns are impacting your relationship with your children.  We can provide services to support the entire family as they heal from trauma and attachment wounds.

We have found that rarely is only one person in a family struggling.  Instead, many people in the family are having difficulties and sometimes the one outwardly showing symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, etc is reacting to other family dynamics.  When the family comes together, the one with the outward struggles tends to also heal faster.

Common reasons for seeking family therapy include:

  • Divorce
  • Adoption
  • Substance Abuse
  • Parent-child conflict
  • Problems between siblings
  • Domestic violence
  • Unexpected or traumatic loss of a family member

Our family therapy consists first of an assessment of the family examining the attachment styles of everyone in the family.  We then take that information and make recommendations which may include individual or couples counseling, family sessions, or play therapy for the young ones in the family.  We provide support group opportunities for parents and adoptive families.  If you're an adoptive family we work closely with Keystone Family Alliance to help you find community and support.  You are not alone!

Some positive family therapy outcomes are:

  • Strategies to develop and maintain boundaries
  • Fostered sense of cohesion and communication among family members
  • Promotes problem-solving through understanding of family patterns and dynamics
  • Builds empathy and understanding.
  • Reduces family conflict
