Karen Mummau, LCSW | CEO & Founder, Matters of the Heart Counseling

Karen Mummau is a licensed clinical social worker and the founder and CEO of Matters of the Heart Counseling in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Holding a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University, Karen brings over 25 years of diverse clinical experience. Her extensive background spans school social work, foster care and adoption casework, supporting pregnant teens, serving as a houseparent at the Milton Hershey School, adjunct teaching at the university level, and outpatient mental health therapy.

Karen specializes in attachment- and trauma-focused counseling for adolescents and adults, with a dedicated focus on supporting adoptive families. Certified in Level II Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) through an EMDRIA-approved program, she integrates evidence-based trauma modalities into her care. Understanding that deep-seated experiences can be difficult to articulate, Karen incorporates expressive techniques—such as art and sand tray therapy—alongside brain-based interventions as a trained Neurofeedback and Heart Rate Variability technician.

Today, Karen’s primary passion is leading and mentoring the team at Matters of the Heart Counseling, providing clinical supervision to foster clinician growth and ensure exceptional, compassionate care for every client.
